What is Food?
Food is one of the basic necessities of life. It is a substance which nourish our body, provides us energy to do work, helps in growth and development and keeps us healthy.
All living beings cannot survive without food.
so, food is very precious. We should not waste food in any way.

Functions of Food
1. Gives energy
2. Keeps our body warm
3. Helps in growth
4. Helps in healing in wounds
5. Maintaining good health

Food Variety
There is a wide variety in food we take. We eat various kinds of food at different times and on different days. This is called variety in food.
People of different reign of our country eat different types of food and cooks differently. A particular variety or preparation of food served as part of a meal is called a dish. We add some substances like spices, oil, water, salt, vegetables, etc. in a food to make a desired taste. These substances are known as ‘food ingredient’. Different ingredients are needed for different types of food. For example: To cook rice, we need raw rice and water. Thus, rice and water are two ingredients for cooking rice.
Some food items need more ingredients to cook them.
For example: Vegetable curry requires different types of vegetables, oil, spices, salts, water, etc.

Sources of Food
Most of the food that we eat from plants and animals. Hence, the main source of food are plants and animals.

Food from Plants
The various parts of plants that are used as food materials are: root, stem, leaves, flowers, fruits and seeds.
Plants are a source of wide variety of nutrients that are required to keep the human body in perfect working condition. Humans get food from fruits, flowers and even the stems of some plants. Leaves and stem-like lettuce, spinach, etc; roots of some plants like carrots, beetroot, etc., and seeds like wheat, rice, etc., are foods. All the food come from plants, even the animals also depend on plants. Hence, the source of all food in this world are plants, directly or indirectly.

Food from Animals
A good portion of the food we eat comes from animals, mostly cattle. Cattle are farmed animals which are specially raised to fulfill our food requirements. There are a few animals that are hunted like deer or rabbits or even kangaroos. Milk, eggs, meat, honey and fish are some food items that we get from animals.

Classification Of Animals On The Basis Of Food They Eat
All the animals can be divided on the basis of food they eat. These are the following:

Herbivores (Plant-eaters)
Some animals eat only plants and their products. These are called herbivores. For example: Cow, Deer, Goat, Rabbit etc.

Carnivores (Meat-eaters)
Some animals eat meat of other animals. These are called carnivores. For example: Lion, Tiger, Snake, Lizard, Jackal etc.

Omnivores
Some animals eat both plants and meat are called omnivores. For example: Crow, Dog, Ant, Sparrow, Mynath, Human etc.
